All water management and use at Peabody mines follow the regulatory frameworks specific to the countries and regions where they are located.

Each of our mines aligns its water management strategy with the specific challenges of its region. In more arid environments our operations focus on water conservation while operations in wetter climates plan for surplus water control. Our environmental teams actively participate in watershed working groups and industry associations to ensure a comprehensive, community-focused approach to planning and control.

In Australia, operations must plan for both wet and dry cycles. Operational risks associated with water are reviewed annually to ensure that adequate planning and controls have been implemented.

In 2025, Peabody withdrew 36,700 megaliters of fresh water globally for dust control and coal processing. Water for Peabody mines is primarily sourced from rainfall and direct runoff. Other sources include surface water, such as rivers and lakes, ground water, and municipal or purchased water.

Water is often reused on-site before being discharged per regulatory standards. Operations also use water for exploration, coal extraction, and land reclamation activities, with minor amounts used for mine location drinking water, showers, and equipment maintenance.
